Figural Field
Studio 08
2018
Reimagining Walter Netsch's concept of figure in the field, this project shifts the focus to interior spaces bounded by site context, speculating on architecture’s potential to catalyze new forms of collective living at the UIC campus. Utilizing field theory, the geometric patterns delineate space programmatically to create new hierarchical levels of public and private clusters within the building. Each level is then marked by distinct orthogonal cues, aiding wayfinding and creating diverse atmospheres throughout.
Site Analysis
Plans
Cross shaped atriums work their way throughout the floors allowing for natural light to reach more than just the perimeter of the interior. On the second floor the atriums serve as a connection point for the dormitories creating clusters of 4 all with a shared sightline.
Site Plan
The design activates the area as a new hub for recreation (1) and education (4). Playing into its new connection with the campus a safer crossing walk is created (2), and the existing parking structure is moved below ground (3).
